This was the game of the year. Zac has been waiting for this one all year long. Fremont players will join Shepherd next year at Red Mountain, so these teams have been talking about this game and waiting for quite awhile. Fremont had lost a couple of games early in the season, so this game wasn't for the championship, but it was the game of the year anyway. It's sort of like BYU vs Utah. Bragging rights were at stake.
Several kids at Fremont were teammates of Zac's on the Pop Warner teams he was on. One of his old coaches was on the staff at Fremont as well, so it was a big deal to go up against them.
Speaking of coaching this was one of those games where the coaching seemed to show. Shepherd had a team that really played well together. Some key talent was injured early in the year, but the kids stepped up their play and the consistent execution by the whole team became the prominent trait of the team. Fremont has talented players, as do most of the teams we saw this year, but only Poston was able to match Shepherd's teamwork. If Shepherd's injuries had been different, I am convinced they would have defeated Poston and won the championship. I think the 2009 Red Mountain JV team looks pretty promising.
Fremont was the last game of the season. Now football is over and the holidays are upon us. It was a good year. Nice job Zac!
